Ontario, BC lead manufacturing rebound

OTTAWA — Manufacturing sales increased for the eighth time in nine months, reports Stats Canada, advancing another half-a-percent to $44.8 billion in May.

As was also reflected in recent export numbers, motor vehicle and parts industries were the primary contributors to the higher sales.

Excluding this sector, total manufacturing sales would have edged slightly.

Overall, the transportation equipment sector posted a 3.1 percent increase.

Half of the provinces post higher sales in May. Ontario and British Columbia led Nova Scotia , Alberta and Newfoundland and Labrador in gains.

Sales were in the other provinces were down.

Meanwhile, inventory levels decreased 0.7 percent in May following a modest rise in April. The largest inventory decline was in the petroleum and coal product industry (-15.5%).

Canada’s Inventory-to-sales ratio decreased to 1.30 in May, the lowest level since July 2008.
