Ontario police prepare for provincial truck blitz

AURORA, Ont. – Just as CVSA’s Roadcheck blitz comes to an end, four Ontario government agencies are gearing up for another targeted truck enforcement campaign next week.

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Ministry of Transportation (MTO), Ministry of the Environment (MOE) and Ontario Municipal Police Services are joining forces for Operation Corridor to crack down on "aggressive" commercial truck drivers and unsafe trucks on the provinces busiest highways.

Operation Corridor is an annual 24-hour border-to-border safety initiative. It runs from Tuesday June 14, at 6 a.m. to Wednesday, June 15, at 6 a.m.

The OPP will focus on speed and moving violations, while MTO and MOE inspectors check for poorly maintained commercial vehicles, mechanical problems that render them unsafe, vehicles that do not meet emission standards and, if appropriate, take them off the road.

Last year, the OPP pulled over 1,769 commercial vehicles, laying a total of 159 speeding charges. Other charges were laid in relation to aggressive driving and "unsafe" vehicles.
