QUEBEC — Montreal-based carrier Canadian Rockies Express Co. Inc. is suspected of a number of fraudulent pick-up loads, Southwest Transportation Security Council warned today.
It's alleged that seven companies have fallen victim to the fraudulent pick-ups, and there may be more who haven't reported the losses yet, Southwest said.
No working number could be found for Canadian Rockies Express.
The current trend in fraud and identity theft, noted Southwest, is legitimate companies being purchased and operated for short periods of time. They retain the operating authorities and insurance of the company purchased appearing to be legitimate; the company then commits multiple fraudulent pick-ups over a short period of time without suspicion.
Southwest said that due diligence must be performed to combat fraudulent and identity theft in the freight industry: confirmation of the broker's identity must be confirmed prior to a working business relationship.
