Regina looks to ban dogs from back of pick-up

REGINA, SK- You and your best buddy are taking a road trip together and it looks like the only thing he likes better than sticking his head out the window, tongue rolling, ears flopping in the wind, is riding in the bed of your pick-up.

But city councillors in Regina are looking at putting a ban on travelling with your dog in the back of the pick-up.

Ward 8 councillor Mike O’Donnell argues it’s unsafe for the dog: bumps in the road or crashes could injure the animal and beyond that, “dust coming into their eyes, they can get all sorts of infections.”

O’Donnell wants Regina to pass a bylaw similar to the one recently passed in Saskatoon, where drivers caught transporting unrestrained animals can get a $100 fine for the first offence and $200 for a second, according to Global News.

Bylaws restricting the transportation of dogs in the back of pick-ups is not uncommon in other parts of Canada. In Calgary, for example, “dogs may only be transported in the back of a truck if the dog is in a fully enclosed trailer, a truck bed covered with a topper, contained in a ventilated kennel that is secured to the truck bed, or securely tethered and not standing on bare metal.”

Regina’s city council is expected to come up with a recommendation in early 2015.

The bylaw does not affect commercial truck drivers travelling with pets.
