SAF-Holland Expands CBX Series

SAF-Holland has expanded its CBX Series air suspension/slider axle system with the new SAF CBX46 and CBX50. They offer robust 5.75-in.-diameter axle technology along with increased capacity and cast-steel suspensions, providing what the company calls “the optimal balance of strength and weight” for on/off highway applications.

With 46,000-lb capacity, the SAF CBX46 is available in the U.S. and Canadian markets for moderate- to heavy-duty van and reefer applications. The CBX46 includes a substantial upgrade to the overall slider strength and rigidity, incorporating a thicker 80-KSI high-strength-steel slider sub-frame material shared with the robust CBX69 Tri-Slider Series. The thicker side sill yields a 31% increase in overall structural rigidity over the company’s CBX40 slider.

The CBX46 includes a new trailing arm shared with the SAF CBX23, providing increased strength and load capacity while minimizing overall weight.

The 50,000-lb capacity of the SAF CBX50 suits it to heavy-duty van and reefer applications, and is also approved for the Mexican market. The CBX50 shares the same increased structural improvements as the CBX46, but it’s further enhanced structurally with two additional crossmembers. The CBX50 is designed with the SAF CBX25 trailing arm, providing increased system strength. This new combination of components produces what is claimed to be the lightest, yet most robust 50K air slider available.

The CBX46 and CBX50 suspension-slider axle systems are available with the optional SAF Integral air disc brake system with the P89 optional wheel-end package. The P89 accommodates up to 2-in. offset wheels for application and maintenance flexibility, allowing fleets to choose the wheel-end offset desired. And the P89 can accommodate both industry-standard wide-base-single wheels with up to 2-in. offsets and dual-wheel configurations. This wider bearing configuration helps distribute the load between the bearings.

The two new CBX suspension/slider axle systems feature SwingAlign, making. axle alignment easy and quick by way of the adjustment screw, requiring less than 250 lb ft of torque to adjust.

Both the SAF CBX46 and CBX50 also include the QwikRelease pin pull for slider adjustments, allowing one-person slider repositioning.

All CBX Series suspension/slider axle systems come standard with the Black Armour metal protection process that chemically bonds with metal to form a protective skin that’s said to be impervious to water and to stand up against the harsh anti-icing agents used on roadways. Eco-friendly, it’s also claimed to be less expensive and lighter than galvanization.
