Severe-Duty Oil

Chevron has unveiled a new category of motor oil designed to address the growth of severe-duty applications in on- and off-highway markets. Delo 400 SD SAE 15W-30 is an API CJ-4 heavy-duty diesel engine oil formulated using a new patent-pending technology.

The company says the nature of heavy-duty trucking is changing. On-highway operations include shorter haul lengths, a growth in intermodal delivery, and more stop-and-go operations in heavy traffic. Off-highway applications have new energy-efficient equipment that helps minimize fuel usage by cycling engines from load to no load. These conditions can make the temperature of critical engine components such as turbocharger bearings soar, increasing the risk of oil oxidation and the potential for deposit formation.

The result, it says, is that heavy duty has become severe duty.

In order for engines to last as long as they’re designed to, the company says there’s a need to re-assess maintenance practices for such operations. A critical part of that process, it says, is to find an engine oil that can handle severe duty.

Delo 400 SD SAE 15W-30 is such a lube, Chevron says. It’s a new patent-pending product formulated with proprietary ISOSYN technology to protect engines in severe-duty applications, and it’s claimed to have exceptional oxidation stability and deposit control. The company also claims improved fuel economy compared to SAE 15W-40 conventional oils — up to 0.7 % more fuel-efficient in long-haul trucks.

The new oil is specifically formulated for on- and off-highway applications including 2010- and Tier 4-compliant low-emission diesel engines.

It will meet a wide range of OEM requirements for engine oil, including Kenworth MX, Peterbilt MX, Cummins, Mack and Volvo. It’s also recommended for use in select engines from Caterpillar, Daimler, Detroit Diesel, and MAN.

Delo 400 SD SAE 15W-30 is also backwards-compatible with previous API oil service categories, and engine models where XW-30 oils are appropriate as noted by the OEM.

The new oil is offered with Chevron’s Warranty Plus protection, which provides bumper-to-bumper warranty protection from the engine to the drive train.
