Shippers paid more for ground transportation in December

TORONTO Shippers paid 2.7 percent more for ground transportation in December ’14 than they did in November, according to the Canadian General Freight Index (CGFI).

“Total Freight costs continue to rise driven by truckload activity in December,” said Doug Payne, president of Nulogx, a logistics company that produces the CGFI. “Cross Border and domestic LTL total costs slid in December, but were out-weighed by the cross-border and domestic TL increases. LTL costs have continued to drop in 2014, particular in the second half.”

“Truckload costs, however, have been increasing over the past several months, and the cross-border TL is significantly higher than December of 2013. This has produced an overall cost that is slightly higher in December 2014 than the same time in 2013,” Payne said.

The Base Rate Index increased by three percent when compared to November 2014 and fuel was 18.56  percent of base rates in December versus 17.95 percent in November.
