Shippers see continued slide in total costs

MISSISSAUGA, ON – Compared to November, the total cost of ground transportation for Canadian shippers in December decreased by 1.1% according to Canadian General Freight Index (CGFI).

Slightly better than a year ago, the Base Rate Index, which excludes the effects of accessorial charges assessed by carriers, decreased by 1.7%.

In addition, average fuel surcharges assessed by carriers increased from 12.67% in November to 13.47% in December.

“Total freight costs continued to slide in December. Cross border LTL led the decrease, followed by cross-border truckload and the domestic segment,” says Doug Payne, president and Chief Operating Officer of Nulogx. “Year over year, total domestic costs remain above last year’s level, and the total cross border costs still remain well below last year’s costs.”
