GRIMSBY, ON — The Niagara Region is once again deciding whether or not to create a truck-specific route around the Niagara escarpment.

The region is re-opening a Class Environmental Assessment, last discussed in 1997, to figure out potential ways heavy duty trucks can travel around the escarpment between Grimsby and West Lincoln.

Currently, Centennial Parkway is the primary route in the west and Victoria Avenue in the east, however there is no suitable alternative in the middle section.

“We rely on trucks to get all of our goods to us on the last mile of their trip, but they’re also very big and can have an impact on quality of life in terms of the noise,” said Jillian Stephen, senior transportation planning engineer with the region, to the St. Catherines Standard.

“We’d like to hear their thoughts on how we balance the two and what’s most important to them as we decide how we go through the process.”

A public information session is being held on June 19 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Grimsby Secondary School on Boulton Avenue. There will be another session in the fall and a final meeting in 2014.
