NEW YORK, NY — U.S. officials are stepping up enforcement on Canadian carriers regarding payment of the federal heavy duty vehicle use tax (HVUT), which may result in some trucks being turned around at the border.

Tax firm Deloitte states that increased enforcement of this tax, applicable to all trucks owned by Canadian carriers that cross the U.S. border and operate on federal highways, could lead to officials electronically checking if drivers have paid the tax before entering the states.

In the case that drivers do not have proof of payment of the tax, customs officials may deny them entrance to the U.S. 

Both the OTA and CTA state they’ve received calls from Western carrier members confirming the increased enforcement of HVUT.
