Tenneco Brakes the Noise

Tenneco Automotive says it has found a better way to shut up noisy trucks. The company introduced the Walker NoiseBraker, a heavy-duty muffler engineered to silence heavy-duty vehicle exhaust and engine-brake noise, all while increasing engine efficiency and fuel economy.

The company says the NoiseBraker’s acoustics are measured under both acceleration and deceleration-“with an innovative ultra-high-flow design that reduces system backpressure by up to 60% over conventional original and aftermarket mufflers.”
The system features dual concentric Helmhotz tuners combined with fibreglass roving to retard noise over a wide range of frequencies. According to Tenneco studies, the NoiseBraker is two to four decibels quieter than the industry’s OE mufflers under engine brake-induced deceleration. The company adds that unlike existing exhaust and engine brake silencers, the NoiseBraker utilizes straight-through exhaust routing to minimize system backpressure while other mufflers channel exhaust flow through baffles and restrictor tubes.
