Towing Committee Looking For A Comeback

TORONTO, ON — On March 25, a private member’s bill to find ways to clean up highway collisions more efficiently was introduced.

Bill 181 would establish an advisory committee to make recommendations to the Minister of Transportation and the Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services for the improvement of highway incident management, the Ontario Trucking Association said in a statement.

The committee would be responsible for:

  • Providing public education programs to improve driver behaviour in circumstances involving highway incidents.
  • Reducing the time for appropriate authorities to detect and verify highway incidents and to clear highways after the occurrence of highway incidents.
  • Providing timely and accurate information about highway incidents to drivers.
  • Enhancing the safety and security of Ontario’s highways.

Several years ago, OTA helped unite the province, the OPP, the Insurance Bureau of Canada, and representatives of the Ontario towing industry in forming the Faster Clearance Working Group (FCWG).

The FCWG is a towing committee part of the OTA, that looks at dishonest activities that might go on during and after a collision cleanup for commercial vehicles.

“Although it was not a magic-wand, the FCWG brought about improvements through better communication between industry, police, government, and the towing sector,” the OTA wrote in a statement.

The FCWG eventually dissolved, but late in 2013, OTA wrote to Minister of Transportation, Glen Murray, asking him to revive the committee.
