Transportation Costs Steadily Climbing

TORONTO, ON — Canadian shippers again saw the cost of ground transportation rise by 0.75 percent in November when compared to October prices, according to the Canadian General Freight Index (CGFI).

“Total freight costs have been on a slow, steady increase for the past 4 months,” said Doug Payne, president of Nulogx. “Once again, this increase applies to all segments – Domestic LTL and Truckload, Cross Border LTL and TL.”

The 0.75 percent increase follows the similar increase shippers saw in October when prices rose by 0.8 percent from September.

In November, the base rate increased by 0.24 percent when compared to October 2013, and does not include accessorial charges such as fuel surcharge.

Carriers said average fuel surcharges decreased marginally. Fuel was 20.54 percent of base rates in November, down from 20.96 percent in October.

The CGFI, which is sponsored by Nulogx, highlights the changes in prices paid for freight transportation by Canadian shippers and represents general truck transportation, but excludes bulk, liquid and other specialty services.

Nulogx helps shippers and carriers secure competitive agreements, evaluate performance and develop business plans.
