Trucker TV Stars Help Stray Dogs in Northern Canada

WINNIPEG, MB— When they’re not playing tough guys on reality TV show, Ice Road Truckers, Winnipeg-based Polar Industries are hauling doghouses to help stray dogs in Northern Canada that may otherwise freeze.

Polar Industries will ship doghouses built by students at Winnipeg Technical College to Norway House, a community of about 6,000 residents, north of Lake Winnipeg and other places, according to the Winnipeg Free Press.

The trucking firm is helping Norway House Animal Rescue (NHAR), which ships dog food and supplies to Norway House. HNAR also plants contraceptive microchips in dogs and flies dogs from the northern community to various rescue homes. In 2014, NHAR flew more than 270 dogs from Norway House, which has about two dogs per household, to Winnipeg at a cost of up to $200 per animal.

The animal rescue center has shipped doghouses up in a pickup truck before, but they need more if they want to keep all the dogs safe and warm through the winter.

Enter Polar Industries, who will ship their first seven doghouses this weekend and will continue to transport doghouses to where they’re needed when space is available.
