HAMILTON, ONT — Do your tractor trailers meet Ontario’s strict new SPIF standards, which changed as recently as July 1? How about your straight trucks? Do you even know what SPIF means?
If you answered 'no' to any of the above you would do well to attend the Thursday, Oct. 20, half-day SPIF seminar, organized by the Hamilton Transportation Club.
The presenter will be Joe Lynch, P.Eng., of the Ontario Ministry of Transportation’s Goods Movement Policy Office. Lynch’ll explain how the provincial fleet will eventually have to migrate to SPIF standards plus he’s qualified to answer questions on pretty much anything related to the VW&D.
Btw, SPIF stands for Safe Productive, Infrastructure-Friendly, and essentially, it’s the new bible for the province’s vehicle weights and dimension guideline.
SPIF standards for trucks, trailers and axles have been introduced over the past 10 years in four stages, with the last — pertaining to straight trucks — coming into effect Canada Day.
Some of your fleet already meets the guidelines; some will be grandfathered in but there’s also a good chance that some of your trucks or trailers will have to be culled or rebuilt.
