Truckers Shatter Six-Month Record for Goods Hauled in '14 Q2

TORONTO— Truckers hauled more goods in the first half of 2014 than any combined semi-annual volumes on record, according to TransCore Link Logistics’ Canadian Freight Index.

June 2014 volumes were the highest ever recorded for any June in any year, surpassing 2008’s record high for the month by eight percent, and 2009’s recessionary lows by 79 percent, according to the index, which measures trends from roughly 5,000 Canadian trucking companies and freight brokers.

Month-over-month load volumes were flat from May to June, but when compared to June 2013, freight volumes swelled by 42 percent.

Here’s where the goods are coming from:

  • 72 percent of all load volumes were cross-border
  • 23 percent were loads travelling within Canada

“Cross-border loads originating in Canada destined to the United States increased 67 percent year-over-year,” TransCore states. “And cross-border loads originating in the United States destined for provinces within Canada increased 30 percent year-over-year.”

Where do the U.S. goods arrive?

  • 58 percent in Ontario
  • 21 percent in Western Canada
  • 19 percent in Quebec
  • Two percent in Atlantic Canada

Goods travelling from province to province represented 23 percent of the total volumes for May and soared 56 percent year-over-year.

Where do they originate?

  • Western 42 percent from Western Canada
  • Ontario 30 percent from Ontario
  • Quebec 20 percent from Quebec
  • Eight percent from Atlantic Canada

Where are they unloaded?

  • 39 percent in Western Canada
  • 36 percent in Ontario
  • 22 percent in Quebec
  • Three percent in Atlantic Canada
