LONDON, Eng. -- British truckers are mad as blazes at the price of fuel and they're threatening to block roads in protest.
According to local news reports, several trucking organizations will be unveiling plans for demonstrations later this week.
Included in the disgruntled groups are the Freight Transport Association (FTA), the Automobile Association (AA) and the Road Haulage Association.
According to the AA, not only are high fuel prices crippling the trucking business, they’re keeping cars off the road and therefore, hurting the economy.
The price of crude has risen from less than $40 per barrel to more than $90 over the last two years and many are predicting it could break through the $100 mark within months.
British protesters want their MPs to encourage OPEC to increase the supply of crude and they also want their government to lower fuel taxes.
Not helping matters, the truckers say, is the British government, which upped the fuel tax twice in 2010 and once this already this year. Another increase is planned for April.
More detail of the British truckers' gripes is on their new protest website www.britishtruckers.com.
Even if they don't get fuel prices lowered, kudos to securing such a good URL domain.
