UPS driver honored as Liberty Life Saver

MISSISSAUGA, ON – Richard Ramdathsingh saw the accident unfold in front of his UPS package car last November. One motorist moved left when there was no place to go. There was the crunch of metal. The rollover came next.

But Ramdathsingh knew exactly what needed to be done. He jumped from behind the wheel and ran to the scene, pulling the trapped driver to safety as gasoline leaked around him. Then he turned his attention to the driver of the other vehicle who was aimlessly wandering down the road, and guided him to safety.

“You’ve got to be prepared for anything,” said the humble driver. “Panic is the first sign of failure. So you get your nerves calm and everything falls in after that.”

He now has a trophy to remind him of the lifesaving act. As fellow UPS drivers gathered before their daily deliveries on Friday, Ramdathsingh was recognized by Liberty Mutual Insurance with the Liberty Life Saver Award.

“Richard immediately stepped to the plate and did what he did to save a life. It’s in his DNA,” said Rita Grikinis of Liberty Mutual Group, who joined colleague Raymond Mercuri in presenting the award open to Liberty customers and employees, or someone who saves them. “There has to be clear and reasonable evidence to show that imminent danger existed and that a human life could have been lost if the action had not been taken.”

“Safety is one of our core values,” said Christoph Atz, UPS Canada president. “Whether it be used at home or at work, we are proud to hear [how] UPSers can use the safety skills and methods that they learned here at UPS in real-life scenarios such as the one Richard faced. Social responsibility involves more than writing a cheque. Here at UPS, we personally commit to making a difference … I’m very proud of Richard.”
