VANCOUVER — You didn’t hear it from us, but consider yourself warned: If you or your trucks avoid the central-Van municipality of Delta because you’ve heard rumors that inspectors are stepping up their game, you could be asking for trouble.

If the cops find out you’re giving them a wide berth, they might sic their inspectors on you.

Or, in the words of Delta Police Chief Jim Cessford as reported in the June 17th edition of the Delta Optimist, truckers who try to outwit the local coops might “get some extra attention.”

(Delta, fyi, is bordered by the Fraser River to the north, the U.S. border to the south and the city of Surrey to the east.)

According to the Optimist, Cessford told the Delta municipal council that in the future, they’re going to be changing their truck-inspection tactics. He said they’ll “shake it up a little and maybe surprise some people. We’ll maybe do some evening checks.”

Cessford was bringing council up to speed on the results of this spring’s commercial vehicle-inspection blitz when he made the comments.

During the weeklong crackdown, inspectors checked 474 trucks. Thirty eight percent were deemed OOS, which is down by four percent over last year’s safety week, when 448 trucks were inspected.

Cessford also warned that if he finds out that any companies are specifically avoiding Delta during the roadside inspection blitz, they will “get some extra attention.”

Police, he said, will "be a little more pro-active coming out to those companies rather than waiting for them to come to us."

The Delta police department is one of the few with a dedicated team of commercial vehicle inspectors and it conducts the largest inspection blitzes in the Lower Mainland.
