Vitran division headed to new frontier

TORONTO – Canadian LTL giant Vitran Corp. has sold its U.S. same-day truckload subsidiary, Frontier Transport, to Online Transport of Indianapolis for about $5 million.

Frontier is an owner-operator fleet of about 300, so the transfer of nearly 800 trailers makes up the bulk of the acquired assets. Vitran says it will retain 174 of Frontier's newest trailers to be redeployed in LTL operations.

Online Transport, said to be one of Indiana's fastest growing fleets, offers a variety of transport services, as well as warehousing and cross docking.

In a press release, Vitran President Rick Gaetz said that Frontier took a "back seat" under Vitran as the Canadian carrier focused on its core LTL and supply chain segments.

"Therefore, we are extremely pleased with this transaction as the majority of our associates will continue to serve our many valued truckload customers, and our sole focus will be on our two core operations," said Gaetz.

Frontier President Steve Cook will continue to lead the unit under new ownership.
