Westcan Bulk Transport wins Canada's Safest Employers award

TORONTO, ON — Edmonton’s Westcan Bulk Transport is the top transportation winner on Canada’s Safest Employers 2016 list by Thomson Reuters Canada.

As profiled in the company’s Canadian Occupational Safety magazine, Westcan has some 1,160 employees and more than a dozen terminals.

In recent years, the company launched a safety awareness program called Actively Caring.

“It’s not a gotcha game, not someone who wants to get you in trouble, not someone who is a know-it-all; they actively care,” Westcan’s Dan Columbus, vice-president of health, safety and environment, told the magazine. “And there is no discipline — that is completely outside the aim of the program,” he added.

Other safety measures include designating May as Distraction Avoidance Month across the company, coinciding with the rollout of a new distraction avoidance policy. Employees were asked to sign a distraction pledge and dedicate it to a loved one. The pledges are displayed at Westcan terminals.

Lastly, Westcan has been proactive in developing a mandatory fatigue management program, with a particular focus on the threat of sleep apnea.

Calgary’s Horizon North transportation company won silver in the transportation category for the Canada’s Safest Employers list.
