WINNIPEG, MB—Many university and college buildings and classrooms across the country are named in honor of influential people or large donors. Why shouldn’t trucking have such an honor? Well, now it does.
At a plaque unveiling, Red River College named one of its classrooms for its long standing partner, Maxim Truck & Trailer, who has donated $100,000 to the Heavy Equipment Transportation Centre (HETC) in 2012 and continues to support the college’s students and alumni.
“The importance of heavy duty technicians to our business cannot be overstated,” said Doug Harvey, president of Maxim Truck & Trailer, which specializes in the sale, rental, leasing, and complete after-sales service of new and used heavy-duty trucks and trailers.
“We are proud to support a first-class training centre at Red River College that helps promote, attract and train heavy duty technicians for the transportation industry.”
HETC has 800 students, nine classrooms and houses four programs: heavy-duty equipment mechanic, outdoor power equipment technician, transport trailer mechanic apprenticeship and transport truck and bus apprenticeship.
“Doug Harvey’s contributions to Red River College and to various causes and organizations demonstrate what an incredible philanthropist and friend he is to the Manitoba community,” said Stephanie Forsyth, president and CEO of Red River College.
“With his passion for the transportation industry, Doug Harvey has been one of the most influential reasons for industry engagement in this monumental project that has allowed the realization of a 60,000 square foot state-of-the-art technical training centre.”
The training centre develops new vehicle technologies through applied research in alternative fuels, emission testing and cold weather environment testing. The facility has enhanced its electrical and mechanical infrastructure, an overhead crane, chassis and engine dynamometers, emission test equipment and an environmental chamber.
