BC container drivers to support NDP

Posted: April 7, 2017

SURREY, BC – Container truck drivers represented by Unifor and the United Truckers’ Association (UTA) will be supporting British Columbia’s New Democratic Party in the 2017 provincial election.

“The BC Liberals have repeatedly dropped the ball managing Vancouver’s ports,” said Gavin McGarrigle, Unifor’s BC area director.

More than 600 members of the Unifor-Vancouver Container Truckers’ Association (VCTA) and the UTA met last Sunday in Surrey for the vote/

Container truckers shut down Port Metro Vancouver for nearly four weeks in March 2014 during a fight concerning rates and waiting times. The work resumed when a Joint Action Plan was signed with the port and the provincial and federal governments. But Unifor says the province has not enforced wage rates.

“Truck drivers have had enough of this government’s broken promises-it’s time for change,” said Paul Johal, president of Unifor-VCTA. “In this election we are urging members to vote NDP.”
