Manitoulin Spans West, Buys Westcan’s LTL, Van Biz

GORE BAY, ON — Manitoulin Transport has announced a deal to buy the less-than-truckload (LTL) and van freight business of Westcan Freight Systems.

The sale is expected to close on Monday, September 8th, 2014.

“Manitoulin and Westcan Bulk Transport share a similar heritage of modest beginnings in the 1960s and steady growth,” said Gord Smith, CEO, Manitoulin Group of Companies. “We also share the same corporate values of exemplary service, environmental stewardship, a commitment to safety, and the desire to be a true customer partner — ensuring a seamless transition for Westcan Freight Systems LTL employees and customers.”

Manitoulin’s purchase of Westacan’s LTL and van freight businesses allows the Gore Bay, ON-based company to expand their presence in Western Canada, offer a greater variety of freight services to customers and focus on the growth of their bulk transportation and construction operations.

Manitoulin Transport was launched in 1960 from the village of Gore Bay, on the North shore of Manitoulin Island in Lake Huron, with a population of 900. Founder Doug Smith started delivering freight from Toronto to Northern Ontario. His son Gord is the current CEO and Manitoulin is an international multi-service logistics operation.
