TORONTO, ON — Truck wheel separations have gotten the attention of one government official who is calling on the trucking industry to step up and address the problem before more people are hurt or killed.
The London Free Press reports Ontario Transportation Minister Steven Del Duca made the comments following two such recent incidents of truck wheels crashing into vehicles along Highway 401, east of London, including one that left a woman dead.
The newspaper’s website reports truck wheel separations in the province have increased dramatically from 47 in 2010 to 148 in 2014. So far this year there have been 82, but that’s still a four year high.
Del Duca is asking the Transportation Ministry to look into ways to improve safety.
Nearly 20 years ago the problem of flying truck wheels reached near-epidemic proportions in Ontario with the province responding with tougher laws and increased fines.
