Natural gas paper offers refuse fleet inspection list

SILVER SPRING, MD – A new best practices whitepaper on natural gas use in refuse trucks includes a 32-item inspection checklist for compressed natural gas facilities.

Co-authored by The Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) and Natural Gas Vehicles for America (NGVAmerica), the whitepaper aims to help fleets understand the alternative fuel’s impact on maintenance, safety, the environment, and day-to-day operations.

The whitepaper estimates that natural gas is used as a motor fuel in approximately 150,000 vehicles in the U.S., and 20 million worldwide. Compared to diesel, natural gas has 27% lower carbon dioxide emissions, 13% – 17% lower greenhouse gas emissions on a well-to-wheel basis (100% renewable natural gas increases that benefit to over 80%), and 95% lower NOx emissions with new natural gas engines on the market.

The whitepaper also examines the different types of storage applications for natural gas and compressed natural gas (CNG). CNG cylinders have a limited service life, typically 15 to 25 years.

Training drivers to understand the risks of natural gas, and how to react in case of an emergency are other components of the whitepaper, available here.
