Reception honors Canadian women in trucking

Posted: April 18, 2016

MISSISSAUGA, ON – Women are a rarity in Canada’s trucking industry, representing just 3% of people who work behind the wheel. But on the same day that Newcom Business Media recognized the first women to be named HighwayStar of the Year, another Truck World gathering celebrated all the industry’s female drivers.

The Salute to Women Behind the Wheel – running for seven years in the U.S. — came to Canada on Saturday afternoon, in an event coordinated by Women in Trucking and OBAC. Highlighting it all was a group photo of about 40 red-shirted, flag-waving female truckers.

“This has been a long time coming,” said OBAC’s Joanne Ritchie.

“Today is your day. Ladies, we’re here to celebrate you,” Andy Transport COO Andreea Crisan told the crowd. “Let us celebrate your courage, your work, and your commitment to the industry.”

The non-profit Women in Trucking association was founded in 2007, with a commitment to positively representing women in the trucking industry.

The event included an assortment of giveaways for female licence holders.
