Mack VP: Will construction labor shortage harm growth?

LOUISVILLE, Ky.– With truck order intake expected to hit near-record levels in 2018, Mack’s senior vice-president for North American sales, Jonathan Randall, is worried about who will drive all the trucks the company is building.

Speaking on the opening day of the 2018 Mid-America Trucking Show, Randall said the construction sector is seeing record spending, lots of job growth, and correspondingly strong order intake from the sector, but he says there are a couple of potentially dampening factors on the horizon.

“There’s a shortage of labor in that sector today, or more specifically, a shortage of construction workers,” he said. “Who is going to drive all the trucks that we’re selling?”
Randall says U.S. GDP is expected to grow by 2.8% this year, and the strong economy is reflected in the strong order intake the industry is seeing this year. To says the economy is robust would probably be an understatement based on what Mack is seeing in truck orders

Mack Anthem debuts in Mexico

GUADALAJARA, MX – Mexico had its first taste of Mack’s Anthem highway tractor on Tuesday, completing the truck’s North American rollout with an unveiling at the Expo Transporte trade show.
Buyers in the country will also have access to more places to find the trucks and service alike. The Trasca dealership group has officially added 18 new locations to Mack’s network. And in the first quarter of 2018, the Original Equipment Manufacturer will begin sending trucks into markets further to the south, including Central America, the Caribbean, Columbia, and Argentina.
“Mack is in Mexico and is here to stay,” said Eduardo Herrera, vice president – Latin America, when revealing the truck he referred to as the best Mack has ever launched in the on-road marketplace. The model replaces the axle-back version of the Pinnacle tractor.
Mexico’s Anthems will include one significant difference when compared to their counterparts in Canada and the U.S., however. Because of different emissions rules in the jurisdiction, the standard power offering will be a Euro 4-rated Mack MP engine. The fuel-saving GHG17 MP8 engine will be an option, but approved only where Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel and Diesel Exhaust Fluid are available.
“Built with Mack’s legendary durability and our latest innovations to improve fuel efficiency and productivity, the Mack Anthem is designed to meet the needs of our Mexican customers,” said Mack president Dennis Slagle in a related release. “We’re confident that these features, along with the new standard of driver comfort delivered by the Mack Anthem, will help boost Mack’s presence in the important Mexican market.”

ALLENTOWN, PA – Mack Trucks is singing the praises of its new Anthem, a highway tractor that will replace axle-back versions of Pinnacle models on the road today.
As a related theme song suggests (yes, it was released complete with a country song), it is “born ready” for life on the highway. Mack is also quick to stress that it’s born in the USA. An official launch for dealers and industry journalists came complete with waving flags, country music, and multiple references to manufacturing at Lehigh Valley Operations in Pennsylvania. An American flag has even been stamped right next to the Anthem name on the truck’s badge.
“We have helped build America,” proclaimed Mack president Denny Slagle, referring to the company’s 117-year heritage. “We have arrived at an important milestone. This launch should be seen as a new day, a new start, a game changer for our beloved Mack brand.”

The truck made its debut in front of hundreds of dealers and industry media at an event that openly waved the American flag, with executives stressing that every Mack sold in the U.S. is still made there.
