Ten Cargo Thefts Topped $1M in 2015

NEW JERSEY CITY, NJ – At least 10 reported incidents of North American cargo theft exceeded $1 million in 2015, according to new data released by CargoNet.

In all, Canada and the U.S. combined for more than 1,500 incidents of cargo theft, ranging from heavy commercial vehicle theft to truck company identity theft. The data reveals that some 881 incidents were specifically associated with stolen cargo. Those thefts are estimated to be worth more than $175.3 million.

Food and beverage cargo remains the top target for thieves, accounting for 28 per cent of theft in 2015. Electronics comprised just 13 per cent of cargo thefts.
