Toronto to truck trash to Michigan

TORONTO (Dec. 5, 2001) — Toronto’s City Council voted 38-2 yesterday to truck the city’s trash to a Michigan dump when the Keele Valley landfill, north of the city, closes next December.

The contract calls for Detroit landfill operator Republic Services to receive up to 1.25 million tonnes of garbage starting in 2003 — roughly 140 truckloads a day.

Yesterday’s vote seems to once and for all scuttle a proposal to ship garbage by rail to the abandoned Adams Mine near Kirkland Lake.
